mutant vehicle

the mission of the black rock department of mutant vehicles is to enable participants to share their mutant vehicle creations with the community of black rock, and to license vehicles for use by disabled participants. the department of mutant vehicles (dmv) must balance the desire to have vehicles at the event with the community standards of keeping it a foot- and bike-friendly event, maintaining a level of safety, and adhering to the stipulations of our land use permit.

arriving in parts, on the back of trucks, hitched to trailers, or driven in, the mutant vehicles are key to the ever growing culture. up america's interstate 80 highway to nevada's black rock desert is where their new home will be for the next eight days, attracting burners, photographers, and curious attendees with displays of light, music, and fire. these often spectacular cars would fail any standard road test, but must pass the criteria set by the department of mutant vehicles (dmv) to be granted a license. this means they must be completely mutated, showing little or none of the original base vehicle.

what is a mutant vehicle?

a mutant vehicle is a unique, motorized creation that shows little or no resemblance to their original form, or to any standard street vehicle. mutant vehicles are radically, stunningly, (usually) permanently, and safely modified from their base vehicle. sometimes the whole vehicle is made from scratch.

mutant vehicles may include such non-standard motorized forms such as furniture, other non-street vehicles such as a boat or train, animals, or just about anything imaginable. for safety reasons, they must not mimic any type of emergency service or law enforcement vehicle.

vehicles merely stripped to the frame and engine, and vehicles with minimal changes or temporary decorations are not considered mutant vehicles.

how are mutant vehicles different from any art car?

a mutant vehicle is, in essence, a specific variety of art car. a mutant vehicle is an art car classification specifically created for use in desert dust. the classification was created because the term “art car” can have a broad definition, and, because of the limit on the number of vehicles the dmv can license, the dmv did not want to deem whether or not someone’s creation was “art”.

ghost frequencies

the ghost frequency camp, known as dusty rainbows in previous years, is an ever evolving camp that has split into new projects with their continuous presence and inspiration on the playa. they are starting a new camp this year called the ghost bar, which will mainly serve fresh fruit drinks and treats of all kinds to its fellow burners. the walk up bar will be topped with the famous ghost mirror that can be found on the front of each ghost car. they also intend on have a few different old school style arcade games, where pacman of course, will be available.

founded by matthew theinert originally, the first car "inky" was created in 2015. many of their friends have helped out with the project in either some part of construction, maintenance, rebuilding, or operations. the addition of "clyde" the ghost happened last year of 2016 and both have been on quite a journey so far. they both traveled almost 20,000 miles in 2016 to attend many different festivals/carnivals such as love burn, edc vegas, escape psycho circus, ect.

clyde came on board with improvements to sound system, advanced lights, and a new "ghost mirror" on the front of the art car acting as the ghost mouth that eats pacman sending him back to 0. inky was then re-equipped with newer and better elements. ghost frequencies is currently in the design stage for potentially a third art car but the details are kept very secret.
